If I get a Delta Sky Miles Card, it states that the first year is free.
What if I decide I do not want to join after the first year? Do I get penalized? I see the annual fee is $59.00. How long are you obligated to belong?

Rita: you are free to cancel after the first year without penalty. I might suggest though that you apply for the American Exp Skymiles Gold Card (fee is waived first year as well, thereafter $95) as it allows you and your traveling party (up to 9 people total) a free checked bag on every domestic flight amoungst other benefits. This in itself can more than pay for the annual fee. You will also get 30,000 Skymiles if you use the card for at least $500 in purchases in the first 3 months.0 comments

Rita, if you decide to cancel after the first year there is no penalty. If you travel quite a bit it may be worth the fee to get the free checked bag.

However there is the Delta Skymiles American Express Option Credit card. That does not have a yearly fee. However the return benfits are not as great as the Gold. You only get a 1/2 a mile for every $1 spent and 1 mile for every $1 spent on Delta, 20% off inflight purchases, and access to the Skymiles Marketplace. However that is is. No great sign on bonus, no baggage exceptions, no priority boarding, no pay with miles options, and no companion certificates. (Companion Certificates are a benfits for renewing the card each year)
